He leaned back in his worn armchair, the leather creaking softly in response. The aroma of brewing coffee filled the small apartment, a familiar and comforting scent. Thomas closed his eyes for a moment, letting the warmth of the mug seep into his hands. The morning light cast long shadows, painting familiar patterns across the walls.

His book lay open on the side table, the pages dog-eared at his current chapter. He felt no particular desire to pick it up, only a gentle contentment that settled in his bones. He knew his routine and enjoyed its predictability.

He heard a soft thud as his mail landed on the welcome mat. He glanced at the envelope, barely noticing the words “Important Notice” printed on the front. He knew, with a certainty that settled deep within him, that he’d look at it later. Much later.
